Caring for Creation – Our Eco Church Journey

At Worcester Cathedral, we believe caring for God’s creation is part of our worship and our witness. That’s why we joined Eco Church – a scheme by A Rocha UK that helps churches live out their care for the environment in practical, lasting ways.

We were thrilled to achieve our Bronze Award in 2022, taking our first big steps towards becoming an ‘Eco Cathedral’. This meant weaving creation care into our worship, improving recycling and energy efficiency, and making our grounds more wildlife-friendly with bird feeders, rainwater harvesting, and wildflower planting.

In 2023, we reached Silver – a milestone made possible by the energy and commitment of our Eco Group and the whole Cathedral community. Highlights included:

• Launching a rewilding project to create a wildlife habitat – twice chosen as a Co-op UK Local Community Fund cause
• Hosting Living Gently on the Earth, a series of inspiring talks and workshops on everything from vegetarian cooking to ethical investments and reducing plastic waste
• Bringing the community together for our first Big Green Eco Fair in the medieval cloister
• Carrying out wildlife surveys, expanding composting, and exploring renewable energy options
• Speaking up for the environment with local MPs
• Launching Worship in the Garden and Sacred Garden, our outdoor worship and engagement with eco-spirituality

We hope to continue our journey towards the Gold Award and our ambitious goal of net zero carbon by 2030 – caring for creation today, for the sake of tomorrow.
