Congratulations to Nicholas Freestone, our Assistant Director of Music, on his appointment as Director Of Music at Westminster Cathedral Choir School. Nicholas will take up his new post in September 2026, and will leave us having completed 8 years as Assistant Director of Music here in Worcester.
In his new role, Nicholas will oversee the provision of music across the school, will work with the Choristers of Westminster Cathedral, will direct the Gallery Choir (who sing a weekly mass in the Cathedral), undertake classroom teaching, and direct a range of school ensembles.
Nicholas said: “I am extremely excited to be embarking on a new role at Westminster Cathedral Choir School from September, but will miss Worcester Cathedral tremendously. It has been a privilege to be a part of the Cathedral’s music-making for eight years, with highlights including two home Three Choirs Festivals, the Office of the Royal Maundy, and the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Voluntary Choir. I am grateful to all of my wonderful colleagues across the staff team, our choristers, lay clerks and choir families, and the wider community of the Cathedral and of music-making across Worcestershire. I will leave Worcester in the summer with so many cherished memories and grateful thanks.”
Samuel Hudson, our Director of Music, added: “We will bid farewell to Nicholas at the end of this academic year with great sadness that he is leaving us, but with sincere gratitude for everything he has done over his time as Assistant Director of Music. We have been privileged to benefit not only from Nicholas’ superb organ playing and choir training, but from the supreme musicianship and professionalism he has brought to every facet of his work here at the cathedral. Nicholas has been not only an exceptional colleague, but a kind and generous member of the Cathedral community.”
We will have a chance to say farewell to Nicholas at the choir’s last Sunday of the academic year on 5 July 2026. After that he will take part in the Three Choirs’ Festival in Gloucester (25 July - 1 August) before moving to commence his new post in the new academic year.
