In 325 AD a large number of bishops (traditionally 318) were summoned to meet at Nicaea by the first Christian Emperor of Rome in order to debate and resolve various issues troubling the unity of the Church. The outcomes of this gathering would include a new creed, a set of canons (rules) on the governance of the Church, an agreed calculation for the date of Easter, and an example and authority which was to be appealed back to again and again in the centuries that followed.
This five-week reading and discussion group will explore through primary texts some aspects of this legacy:
Tuesday 14 October 2025 – Creeds and Confessions
Tuesday 21 October 2025 – Heresy and Schism
Tuesday 4 November 2025 – Councils and Canon Law
Tuesaday 11 November 2025 – Easter and the Christian Calendar
Tuesday 18 November 2025 – Church and State
(n.b. no meeting on Tuesday 28 October)
