'The History of Christmas' Talk

15 December 2022 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

'The History of Christmas' shall explore its pagan origins and how and when it became a Christian Festival.

In a fully illustrated talk on 'The History of Christmas', explore its pagan origins and how and when it became a Christian Festival. Be fascinated by Richard II's Christmas menu, but prepare to be dismayed to find Christmas banned for 13 years!

Learn about the origin of our carols; the Victorian creation of the modern Christmas - with Dickens, Prince Albert, the first Christmas cards and crackers. Be moved by a Great War truce but appalled by a Nazi Christmas; intrigued by long-distance turkeys; moved by Royal broadcasts; bemused by the statistics of a modern Christmas and by who eats Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner; and finally marvel at wonderful Nativity Art, closing with a unique sculpture from our own Cathedral.

And every so often a poem will interrupt proceedings.
