Founding Worcester Cathedral | Archaeology Symposium 2024
From Anglo-Saxon origins to medieval bell-casting, travel back in time & unearth the discoveries of the College Hall Undercroft excavations. Join us as we re-launch the tradition of an annual archaeology symposium sharing recent findings from Worcester Cathedral. This year, the 30th symposium will focus on the remarkable findings of the Undercroft excavations.
In 2019-2020, a single narrow trench was opened across College Green to bring pipework into the new Education Centre in the Undercroft. The archaeology in this small trench was so complex and exceptional that it allows us to write the early pages of Worcester Cathedral’s history.
The day will bring specialist speakers to help present the archaeological findings, including Roman settlement and industry, the foundation of the Anglo-Saxon cathedral church, the interplay between monastery and Norman castle, and the medieval manufacture of bells within the precinct.
Join us in the Abbot's Kitchen of the Old Bishop's Palace in-person (day ticket £30 with lunch) or remotely (£10 to live stream - link to follow). Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day, with a semi-seated lunch of sandwiches etc.

Funds raised through this will be spent to support the Cathedral’s ongoing running and renovation costs, wherever those funds can be most effective.
