Retired Cathedral Ferry Master Mark Glossop was presented with a very special accolade on Friday night – the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award.
Mark’s award came as somewhat of a surprise, after the Cathedral originally entered him in the Unsung Hero category. The Visit Worcestershire team was so impressed with Mark’s story, they decided to award him this special honour, in recognition of his contribution to tourism in Worcestershire over four decades.
In 1983 Mark relaunched the Cathedral Ferry – a service with a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it provided a direct crossing for monks and milkmaids to work in the meadows. It crossed the river every day until the late 1950s.
Mark sourced ‘Doris’ the boat when on holiday that year, and it's the same ferry that still runs today.
